“There are some lanterns here.” I lifted a metal and glass oil lamp; it was so similar to ones we used to use on Earth, before electricity of course. The clear chimney had tiny bubbles dotting the surface and when I moved it around in my hands, an oil slick sheen of colors came to life. So not my version of glass, but something otherworldly. Could you say otherworldly when it was an item from the alien planet you were currently captured upon? This worldly. No, that didn’t sound right.

I rifled around for matches, hoping the inch of oily substance in the lamp would be enough to glow away the shadows of the dome house.

I loved period novels, the kind that glorified life before things got so damn complicated.

I could imagine myself in a beautifully-tailored nightgown, empire waist giving way to flowing skirt, with lace at the collar perhaps. My hair would be loose, falling in alluring coils down my back.

My own personal Mr. Darcy would spirit his way into my house at night, professing his inner torment by candlelight.

It would be completely inappropriate and put my reputation at risk, yet it would be undeniably romantic too. I’d swoon after he was gone, and rethink my dislike of him. There’d be more drama, my family on the brink of ruin, yet it would all turn right in the end.

Yes, lighting the lamp would make me feel better. I knew it would.

Of course, Azi dashed my hopes.

“Sure, let’s light one and bring every other gladiator pair in the vicinity straight to our doorstep, Princess,” Azi jabbed cruelly. I hated how his mood changed, how one moment he seemed to care about me, and the next he couldn’t be done with me soon enough.

“Right, dumb of me.” I put the lamp down and a cloud of dust blossomed from the table’s surface. Roughhewn metal plates were scattered around the lamp. No, not scattered, but placed purposefully. Set for a family to come together over a meal. “What happened to this planet, anyway? If it used to be inhabited, where are all the people now?”

I mourned the family who used to sit at the table and sleep in the nearby beds of the one-room home. They’d loved, hadn’t they? They’d laughed together and celebrated one another’s successes.

“The war happened,” Azi grumbled, nearly stomping over to one of the beds and flopping down. His arm flew up to cover his face, the crook of his elbow pointed over the bridge of his nose.

“What war?” I poked, going to the kitchen cabinets and opening them, hoping for something to eat. We’d found a few things at the stash house, but they were all so… alien looking. I wasn’t sure what I hoped to find. A Twinkie, maybe? Those lasted forever. If they had human water, they could have human snacks too. I’d kill for a fluffy pink ball stuffed with marshmallow cream.

Tessa would give me a hard time if she found me eating crap like that.
